Offline rendering is the process of generating an image or video from a model by means of computer software. The rendering takes place entirely in the CPU, this has the main advantage that it is not restricted to the (limited) capabilities of graphics hardware, but the disadvantage that it's more time consuming and changes cannot be made " on the fly".

Offline rendering is used to create realistic images and movies, where each frame can sometimes take hours to complete and movie scenes may take days to complete because of their higher quality in lighting, materials, reflections, etc.
